Housing Joint

A note about the first term

During the first term of the course, we are not yet officially registered with City & Guilds. This period is being used to develop and practise our fundamental hand-working skills before we begin the formal qualification.
The joints documented during this period are therefore part of this preliminary skills-building stage. They give us the opportunity to practise accurate marking out, sawing, chiselling and fitting by hand, while developing the basic techniques we'll need as the course progresses.

Housing Joint

Our first practical joint on the Carpentry & Joinery course was the housing joint.

The housing joint is a relatively simple joint, but it introduced us to some of the fundamental skills we'll be using throughout the course — accurately marking out, cutting to a line, removing waste and producing a clean, accurate fit.

We were shown the correct method of marking out the joint before moving on to cutting and chiselling the housing. The aim was to produce a joint that was clean and square, with the two pieces fitting together neatly.
