Dovetailed Half Lap

Half-Lapped Dovetail Joint

The half-lapped dovetail joint was the next joint we worked on at college. This introduced another new technique and required more careful marking out and cutting than the housing joints we had previously made.
The joint combines a half lap with a dovetail, requiring the angled dovetail section to be accurately marked and cut so that the two pieces fit together correctly. As with the previous joints, accurate marking out was essential, but this exercise gave us another opportunity to develop our hand skills and attention to detail.

The dovetailed half-lap was technically more difficult to make than the joints we had worked on previously. However, as with the stepped housing joint, the critical factor was accurate marking out. With the angles and dimensions marked correctly, the cutting and chiselling became much more manageable.

The joint turned out really well, and I was very happy with the finished result. Gary explained that, to achieve a distinction, there must be no gaps wider than 1 mm in the finished joint. My joint was a snug fit with no significant gaps, so I was pleased to achieve a Distinction, as I had with the previous joints too.

It was particularly satisfying to see that the care I was putting into my marking out and hand skills was producing consistently good results.
